Short biography
Dr. Fernando Gomes da Silva is a Brazilian urologist with over 25 years of experience in clinical and surgical practice, academic training, and research in sexual and reconstructive medicine. He received his MD from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) in 1997, completed a residency in General Surgery at Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro, and specialized in Urology at Hospital Naval Marcílio Dias. He later completed an advanced fellowship in Reconstructive Urological Surgery at Pedro Ernesto University Hospital (UERJ), under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Eloísio Alexsandro da Silva.
At UERJ, Dr. da Silva actively participated in the scientific research group and collaborated with the Translational Medicine Laboratory, where he was involved in pioneering research in tissue engineering and regenerative urology. He also worked extensively in specialized outpatient clinics, including pediatric urology, gender-affirming surgery, and complex genital reconstruction, gaining hands-on experience in advanced surgical techniques.
In 2010, he earned a Master’s degree in Urology at UERJ, with a thesis entitled “Evaluation of Human Tunica Albuginea Acellular Matrix as a Potential Biological Graft.” Supported by the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq), this project led to the World's first publication on the production of a human-derived acellular matrices for penile grafting (The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2011) and cited in Campbell-Walsh Urology. Latelly, it was used as a graft for penile reconstruction in a non-published yet Clinical Trial in Rio de Janeiro State University.
Dr. da Silva’s research and clinical interests include Peyronie’s disease, erectile dysfunction, corporal reconstruction, tunica albuginea grafting, and penile surgery using biological and autologous grafts. In addition to his work on tissue regeneration, he co-authored studies on the psychosocial and clinical aspects of urology, including “The Management of Erectile Dysfunction with Placebo Only: Does It Work?” (JSM, 2009) and “Assessment of Domestic Violence Against Children and Adolescents with Enuresis” (Jornal de Pediatria, 2009).
He has received numerous academic awards, including the SLAMS Basic Research Award (2009), SLAMS/JSM Fellowship Grant (2008), Best Free Paper at the XVIII Carioca Urology Meeting (2008), and was a finalist for the Revista Saúde National Research Prize. In 2023, he was awarded a competitive fellowship to attend the European Society for Sexual Medicine School, further strengthening his commitment to education and innovation in sexual medicine.
In 2020, Dr. Silva was invited by the prominent Brazilian physician Dr. Alexandre Miranda to join the iGrafter course group, aimed at disseminating the technique for curvature correction and penile cylinder restoration in patients with Peyronie’s disease.
In 2024, he had the honor of being invited by Dr Miranda to serve as Vice-Chair a WSMS 20024 pre-congress course, I Penile Curvature Summit, in Rio de Janeiro.
Dr. da Silva currently works in private practice in Niterói (Rio de Janeiro), focusing on sexual medicine, Peyronie’s disease, penile reconstruction, and complex genital surgery. He is a long-standing member of the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU), the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM), and the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM).
In 2025, he was invited by the editorial team of the Journal of Sexual Medicine as a peer reviewer, contributing to the advancement of academic excellence in the field.
